Baseball “Take Me Out to The Ball Game” Turns 100 Years Old!

July 30th, 2010 inshoppersworld 14 comments

1908 “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” song which became the unofficial anthem of baseball, although neither of its authors had attended a game prior to writing the song, celebrates 100 Years! www.Myzeidi.com Harvey Hindermyer, a member of the Shannon Four singing group and a popular radio performer later in life, recorded the song in 1908 for Columbia Records. The original 1908 lyric. History of the song. The words were written in 1908 by Jack Norworth, who while riding a subway train, was inspired by a sign that said “Baseball Today — Polo Grounds”. The words were set to music by Albert Von Tilzer, (Norworth and Von Tilzer finally saw their first Major League Baseball games 32 and 20 years later, respectively). The song was a top 10 hit for three recording artists in 1908, but wasn’t performed at a ballpark until Pepper Martin and his teammates played it before Game Four of the 1934 World Series at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis. The Cardinals went on to win the game and the series. “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” ranks third on the list of America’s most-sung songs, behind “Happy Birthday” and the National Anthem. But while “The Star-Spangled Banner” can’t be properly sung by anyone not named Pavarotti, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” is the province of every man and woman. It’s been recorded by more than 400 artists, from Frank Sinatra to Frank Zappa. It’s been performed live by Mike Ditka and Ozzy Osbourne — with varying skill levels.
